Co-Founder & Chief Science Officer

Youngkyu Sung

Youngkyu Sung is Co-Founder & CSO of Atlantic Quantum, where he leads the company’s foundational research and development efforts, encompassing everything from modeling and simulation to quantum processor chip layout design.

During his PhD at MIT, Youngkyu emerged as a global leader in characterizing noise and reducing error rates in quantum processors. He developed the tunable coupler architecture, which has become the industry standard for transmon qubit chips used by major players like Google and IBM.

Additionally, he achieved record-low error rates for two-qubit gate fidelity in superconducting quantum computers, a benchmark that was later surpassed by fellow Atlantic Quantum co-founder Leon Ding.

Youngkyu holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT and a BS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Seoul National University.
